Model simulation of a tornadic supercell
The model simulation, shown in this video, was part of the study of a tornado that hit Taranto (southeastern Italy) in November 2012. The video shows the evolution of the vertical vorticity at 2000 meter altitude, result of a simulation with the limited area meteorological model WRF. The simulation is performed on 3 grids, nested one inside the other, with grid spacing of 9, 3 and 1 km respectively. The video shows the result of the simulation on the innermost grid; the model outputs are shown at 5-minute intervals, from 0900 to 1100 (Greenwich time) on 28 November 2012. The red zone, corresponding to a maximum of vertical vorticity, which formed in the Ionian Sea and made landfall near Taranto, identifies the supercell simulated by the model, which corresponds well, in terms of trajectory and timing, to that observed in Taranto and that generated a tornado of EF3 intensity (level 3 of the Enhanced Fujita scale).
